Civil Engineer [for private construction projects]
A Civil Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of building structures in private sector projects. He/she must ensure that all projects meet technical standards, safety regulations, and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities & Authorities
1. Planning & Design
- Prepare detailed engineering designs, drawings, and specifications.
- Conduct feasibility studies, site assessments, and technical evaluations.
- Use engineering software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, STAAD, etc.) for design and modeling.
- Develop cost estimates, project timelines, and resource plans.
- Oversee and coordinate construction activities on-site.
- Ensure projects are delivered within scope, budget, and schedule.
- Liaise with contractors, consultants, architects, and regulatory authorities.
- Perform risk assessments and implement mitigation plans.
- Inspect construction work to verify compliance with design, safety, and quality standards.
- Issue site instructions and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Review and approve technical drawings and contractor submissions.
- Perform quality checks, audits, and testing procedures.
- Troubleshoot design and construction issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred for senior roles).
- Professional certification (PE, Chartered Engineer, or equivalent) is an advantage.
- 3–10+ years of experience depending on the job level.
- Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles and construction methods.
- Proficiency in engineering software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SAP2000, ETABS, etc.).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong project management and organizational abilities.
- Effective communication and teamwork.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Mobility: Must be able to walk and climb to perform duties, including maneuvering within a refinery or plant environment and accessing elevated platforms via ladders and stairwells.
- Communication: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, or other communication capabilities, to communicate effectively.
- Focus and Multitasking: Ability to maintain focus and multitask effectively.
- Safety Equipment: Must be able to wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection, if/where needed in manufacturing environments.
- Personal Mobility and Reflexes: Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodations, to perform office duties and travel to off-site locations when necessary.
